We Could Use More Civil Liberties Pests TBH
The ACLU has a long, proud history of being a pest about protecting Americans' civil liberties. The group's efforts can seem counterintuitive and/or downright exasperating when, for example, they're defending the right of a group such as the Ku Klux Klan to enjoy the full protections of the Constitution.
But you know what we could really use more of right now, what with the Trump administration speedrunning the creation of a vast, unchecked police state and all: organizations that are unabashed guardians of the U.S. constitutional order.
What's the Ohio chapter of the ACLU up to? Challenging Governor DeWine to pull Ohio National Guard troops out of Washington, D.C. Challenging Ohio State's expulsion of a student for online speech about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Challenging Ohio counties to release ICE detainees being held without legal authority. What ACLU of Ohio is up to, in other words, is the type of aggressive frontline engagement with Trump II and its collaborators that progressives, Republican Never-Trumpers and law-loving people in general have been clamoring for.
